Before the first run of the course Digital Accessibility: Enabling Participation in the Information Society on FutureLearn, the MOOCAP partners looked at roughly 20 different platforms for online courses and digital learning materials. We used several criteria to guide us in our choice of the platform, such as:
- The accessibility of the platform for people with disabilities, including features such as captions for videos, and the accessibility of the forums.
- The size or popularity of the platform, since we wanted to attract at least 1000 participants to our introductory course. (As you can read in The First Run of “Digital Accessibility” in Numbers, we clearly achieved that goal.)
- The right to publish our learning materials under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0) or a more recent version of that licence. This was an important criterion, because we also wanted to make the creation of other courses easier.
After a first series of assessments in 2014, we did another review in early 2016. The result of this second review was that FutureLearn remained our first choice. You can download the full report in PDF format from this website.
